America Septentrionalis
|
Based on the landmark work of G. De L"isle, this map gives us a colorful and decorative view of North America. While it provides fascinating coverage of the foreign settlements, it also gives us the names and locations of numerous Indian tribes. Regions of North America are distinctively colored to clarify European affiliation. The cartographer here has craftily handled the issue of California. While it was thought at the time to be an island, here we see a compromise, as the region is shown neither definitely connected, nor clearly as an island. Shows interesting boundaries for the early colonies. A fine engraving in beautiful condition.

America Septentrionalis... (North America)
|
This is a striking map of the new world, with bold hand color and some very notable qualities. Showing the colonial possesions of several nations, we see the Spanish developments in the southwest, French territories throughout Canada and the western Mississippi valley, as well as the British colonies. With suprisingly accurate depictions of rivers and coasts, this map provides a reasonably proportionate image of an expansive land. Borders are well distinguished by color, yet there are hints of expansion as the borders of the southern colonies not only extend to the Mississippi, but continue beyond into the French Louisiana territory. The map is well complimented by a large decorative cartouche showing Native American and a European settler. This is a classicly handsome map in very good condition.

Cambri=Ae Typus Auc Sore Humfe Do Lhu=Ydo (BRITISH ISLES, WALES)
|
Art Source International is proud to offer rare maps from the atlas produced in 1633 by one of the dominant map-making houses of the 30's. Although it is somewhat unclear which maps were published cooperatively between Henricus Hondius and Joannes Jassonius and which were individual works, this map illustrating Wales appears to be from the French atlas "L"Appendix". The atlas that this map is attributed to was first published in 1633 by Hondius and Jassonius and contained individual works by each map-maker, some derived from Henricus's brother Jodocus" plates, and a number of maps by Mercator that Hondius acquired from his father -also Jodocus.
Beautiful hand coloring highlights rivers, coast lines, and the boundaries of regions. Two ships and sea monsters accent the ocean, and forests and mountain ranges are colored on the land.

|
This map was made by Robert de Vaugondy for an ENCYCLOPEDIE by Denis Diderot.
This map has exceptionally wide margins, and bright hand coloring. Diderot's maps were intended to further an understanding of the Western Coast of America, and NE Asia, during a time period immediately prior to Cook's first voyage where numerous theories abounded on these regions, especially the NW Coast of America. This original copper plate engraving is in excellent condition. The map shows the northern part of Siberia and the coast of Asia and appears to be a companion of maps #1. Four maps are inset showing details of the Alaska Japan area.

Carte Generale des Decouvertes (NORTH AMERICA, SIBERIA, RUSSIA)

Diderot made this map illustrating important discoveries and voyages from Spain and Russia to western North America in 1772. The remarkably well maintained, copper plate engraved map still has crisp, even, hand coloring as issued distinguishing major geographical/political realms. An inset shows islands in the Mer de Tartarie. The discrepancies between today's knowledge of the North American coast and how it was mapped in the 1700's makes this beautiful and rare map a significant historical document.

This map is from the great master whose work is coveted and sought after for its highest quality and exemplar craftsmanship. Blaeu's work set the highest standards with adroitly tooled copperplate engravings which were almost artistic in their use of line and texture. As with most all the French cartography of this time, there is a wonderful clarity to the maps as well as a nice sense of presentation. Peru
|
Art Source International is proud to offer rare maps from the atlas produced in 1633 by one of the dominant map-making houses of the 30's. Although it is somewhat unclear which maps were published cooperatively between Henricus Hondius and Joannes Jassonius and which were individual works, this map illustrating Peru appears to be from the French atlas "L"Appendix". The atlas that this map is attributed to was first published in 1633 by Hondius and Jassonius and contained individual works by each map-maker, some derived from Henricus's brother Jodocus" plates, and a number of maps by Mercator that Hondius acquired from his father -also Jodocus.
The imprint of Joannes Jassonius is found on the large, exceptionally well maintained map. Beautiful hand coloring highlights rivers and the coast of Peru. The ships sailing among the monster-fish fly flags colored to represent the countries from which they hail. Many place names are identified, especially along the coast. The map is oriented as if one were sailing towards it from the east -the inland is at the top of the map. The large cartouche bearing the title also provides distance scales.
