This detailed map shows Lewis and Clark's track across the western portion of North America from the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean, by order of the Executive of the United States in 1804, 5, & 6. It was copied by Samuel Lewis from the original drawing of William Clark.

Herman Moll's large and attractive map shows the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the surrounding mainland and islands in great detail. Several inset harbor charts and a handsome view of Mexico City add to the beauty and interest of distinctive engraving.

In 1739 this view, based on an old map no longer extant, appeared in Maitland's History of London. The details of mercantile London and royal Westminster are identified in the legend at the bottom of the sheet.

Simeon de Witt's engraved plan of Albany three years before it became the state capital shows the gridiron expansion intended to accommodate this new function. Along the river lies the older part of the community dating from Dutch settlement in the 17th century.

This view is from the east with the Hudson River in the foreground. It shows the busy waterfront against the background of the city. The state capitol can be seen near the center of the lithograph.

The fine buildings of this Virginia port can all be seen on our colored bird's eye view published during the Civil War by Charles Magnus of New York. Of particular interest are the blocks near the water front which have been restored in recent years.

In 1562 Diego Gutiérrez, a Spanish cartographer from the respected Casa de la Contratación, and Hieronymus Cock, a noted engraver from Antwerp, collaborated in the preparation of a spectacular and ornate map of what was then referred to as the fourth part of the world, America. It was the largest engraved map of America to that time. The map depicts the eastern coast of North America, all of Central and South America, and portions of the western coasts of Europe and Africa. Six engraved sheets are neatly joined to form a single map. It is apparent that one of the intentions in preparing the map was to define clearly Spain's America for the other European powers who might have designs on the region. Includes texts in cartouche, statements of dedication, coats-of-arms, an illustration of the allegorical figure "Victoria", and illustrations of sailing ships at sea and imaginary marine creatures.

Diego Gutierrez was a cosmographer at the Casa de la Contratacion in Seville, and as such he had access to the majority of Spanish charts. In 1562 Hieronymus Cock of Antwerp drew on these to produce this the first large scale engraved map of the New World. The source of the cartography south of the Amazon River is, however, unknown; Caraci speculates that there appears to be an unidentified Italian influence. Produced on six sheets, it records the expanding Spanish exploration, particularly southwards along the west coast of South America. The map reflects the death of Gutierrez in 1554 in that more recent explorations are not recorded, particularly those in the southeast of North America by de Soto and others. It credits Amerigo Vespucci with the discovery of the in 1497, a frequent error of the time. Here we find the first appearance of the name California, C California; however, we do not see any of the west coast north of the peninsula. Another introduction here is the use of Mar Pagaero (Alvarez de Pineda?s Bay) for the bay formed at the mouth of the Rio del Espirito Santo, possibly the Mississippi River. The map is decorated with numerous creatures in the sea, and a shipwreck off the east coast of North America. This probably reflects the Carolina Banks, it is detailed with a life raft and crew jumping overboard. There are only two recorded complete examples surviving; these reside at the British Library and the Library of Congress.

The first phase of Amsterdam's expansion in the 17th century began in 1610 with the development of three ring canals. This engraving by the great Dutch cartographer, Nicholas Visscher, was published about 1670. It shows the start of the second stage of development which extended the ring canal pattern around the medieval city.

One of Michigan's older cities is the subject of the fine 19th century lithograph view. Prominent in the foreground are the buildings of the University of Michigan.

Francis Nicholson planned Maryland's capital in 1694. The details of its unusual design appear in this fully colored view originally published by Charles Magnus.

Albert Ruger prepared the earliest bird's-eye view of Georgia's capital after the city had entered a period of vigorous rebuilding and expansion following its devastation during the Civil War. Minutely drawn and attractively colored, this is a fine example of 19th century lithographic art.

The University sites for public use and other open spaces were all part of the original design of 1839. The plan resulted from a public initiative taken by the Republic of Texas, which acquired the site by eminent domain and laid out the town through a special commission authorized by the Legislature and approved by President Lamar.

From a sketch made by John Moale showing conditions in the infant city this aquatint was published about 1815. This reproduction is from an original in The Peale Museum in Baltimore.

Louis Le Breton, a French marine artist, drew this charming view as one of a series showing major ports of the world. He exaggerated the heights of spires and chimneys to give Baltimore the appearance of a Middle Eastern city.

Reproduced like the original with an accent tone supplementing the basic lithography, this view of Baltimore by Sachse shows the city and harbor in the background against the Washington Monument and fashionable Mount Vernon Place.

Maine's most fashionable summer resort on Mount Desert Island is shown in its magnificent natural setting on our fine, toned lithograph. The town's elaborate hotels and imposing mansions are all clearly depicted by the artist from a point high above the harbor.

This is the Berlin of Frederick the Great. It shows the new districts planned in the previous century beyond the restricted, walled perimeter of the original urban nucleus. An unusually extensive legend in French and German identifies all places of interest.

In the 1840's and 1850's C. Joseph Meyer published his Hand-Atlas, part of a larger book, serial, and encyclopedia publishing empire he established in 1826. Dozens of city plan-panoramas were produced, all of which were delicately colored steel engravings showing trees, buildings, fields, and lanes in exquisite detail. The plan of Berlin also includes a view of the city in the lower half of the image and insets of significant buildings.

Settlement began here in 1772 with the establishment of a Spanish mission. Near the end of Mexican rule in California the town achieved civil status. This view was drawn and published by E.S. Glover.

E. S. Glover's toned view of Utah's major rail center on the Union Pacific shows the community that was designed in 1850 by Brigham Young and surveyed the following year by Henry Sherwood. The legend identifies many Mormon buildings.

Published when Bismarck became the seat of government of Dakota Territory, our toned view shows the projected capitol as if completed. Its cornerstone had been laid that year in an elaborate ceremony attended by ex-president Grant and Henry Villard, head of the Northern Pacific, whose railroad was expected to make the city a major metropolis.
