This map influenced a generation of cartographers who studied and reproduced this map in their own works, such as Merian and Janson. The map itself shows us an intricately detailed view of the new world, with a substantively accurate South America and a North America that still contained a severe distortion of the western coast. Insets show us the theorized nature of the North Pole and the fabled contours of a supposed South Pole. The oceans abound with dramatically illustrated masted ships and numerous sea monsters. Handsome strap work surrounds the title block, as well as the map insets. Two small vignettes in the interior of South America appear to show us Europeans meeting an native king, and in Brazil, a small party of cannibals.
