This map is from the extremely rare and well maintained 1890 edition of the county and railroad atlas made by George F. Cram. Each state map is mostly black and white with bright coloring used to highlight county and state borders. The names of counties, important towns, rivers, Indian reservations, creeks, lakes and mountain ranges are identified, as well as railroads and the names of station stops. This map illustrates the state of Alabama. Cram's distinctive title plates, coloring, and topographical details found on the maps in this hard to find 1890 atlas make them outstanding collectible pieces.

13. Colorado, Tenmile District Special Map - Economic Geology Sheet
The United States Geological Survey publishes topographic maps of the entire united states. These maps are often used as the basis for other commercial map products and they serve as one of the best tools available for navigating the country's wild and urban terrain. The maps show contour lines (lines of equal elevation) which depict natural features of the land, as well as streams, roads, trails, forest types, buildings, and other natural man-made features. The quadrangle maps are published at a scale of 1:31,680. It has become more difficult over the years to find these older publication dates.

14. COLTON'S ILLINOIS

15. Colton's Illinois, with inset of Chicago
For over 60 years the Colton family was the premier publisher of maps in the United States. J.H. Colton, the company founder, issued his first “General Atlas” in 1855 and continued publishing this atlas until 1888. These are the first maps we have ever offered from his 1861 “General Atlas”. We believe these 1861 maps are some of his most difficult to find. Every collection should have at least one map by J.H. Colton.

17. County Map of the State of Illinois
The Mitchell company was one of the first to try out the new technique of engraving on steel plates experimenting with steel almost 20 years before the rest of the publishing industry. He was printing with steel in the early 1830's; the general switch to steel was approximately 1850. During the early years of the company, Mitchell published mainly maps and travel guides. In 1860, Mitchell started producing "Mitchell's New General Atlas",and Mitchell Sr. retired and turned the business over to his son of the same name. The New General Atlas was published until 1893. Today Mitchell maps are sought after for their fine engraving, bright coloring, and attention to detail. They are some of the finest maps produced during this time period. This map produced in 1866, has Mitchell's unique floral border, and beautiful hand coloring. This map details the state of Illinois with an inset map of Chicago. Counties, cities, towns, lakes, rivers, mountains, and transportation routes are noted. Each map was printed on thick paper with vibrant hand color.

Rand McNally made this "Commercial Atlas of America" in 1920. The section of the United States between Denver and Chicago is illustrated on this large, very detailed map. Counties, cities, towns, churches, important land forms, train stations, railroad lines, Native Indian reservations, major roads, post offices and telegraph stations are all identified. Each existing railroad route is mapped and stations are identified by a number which corresponds to a key providing its name. Some distances and common sea routes are shown between points on the coast and various other locations. The populations of principal cities are provided in the margin.

This large scale map came from the 1905 Rand-McNally Indexed Atlas. This multi-colored map of the eastern US shows railroads, roads, counties, cities, towns, Indian reservations and many topographical features. All railroads operating in 1905 are shown on this map, including a detailed list of the railroads in red. Numerous small towns are shown, many of which have now become ghost towns. The back side of the map contains a referenced list of cities and their locations. This map is in very good condition and contains fantastic detailing.

Rand McNally made this "Commercial Atlas of America" in 1920. The United States from Chicago to Maine is illustrated on this large, very detailed map. Insets show the southernmost sections of Texas and Florida at the same scale as the main map. Railroad lines and stations, state names, important cities, and major land forms are identified.

29. Framed Chicago
Made after the great fire that destroyed so much of the heart of the city, now we see a urban center growing quickly. The downtown areas that were ravaged by the flames, here are shown as redeveloped and replete with several rail lines running through their midst. This map covers the majority of the city at the time, spanning from Belmont in the north to S. 59th Street in the south, and as far west as just beyond Crawford blvd. Most notable about this map is the unusual inclusion of a indexed street guide at the bottom of the map. This is an uncommon map of the city, with beautiful presentation. Condition very good. This image completed with fine archival framing, complete with inner liner, marbel paper, cloth mat, UV protective glass and ornate black wood frame.

38. Nickel Plate Road the New York, Chicago and St. Louis R.R. Co. and Connections
This map comes from a set of Railway maps that captures the US at a time when the Railroads were the arteries of commerce. While this map shows us a specific line, which is emboldened, there are numerous connecting lines shown, and one quickly can see the age when the rails were king. The maps are intended to be topical, so while every stop and whistle stop is shown on the rail lines, there typically isn"t much additional information shown which could clutter the image. Condition is wonderful on this map, which is clean, with just slight folds. A must for any railway enthusiast.

As the 19th century was drawing to a close, American expansion was changing the continent with industrialization in the East and settlement in the West. This map published by Grants in the 1890 features unusually good detail for railroads, towns and cities of the time. This is an uncommon map of the area in good condition with a printed outline color that highlighted the railroads. Grants maps are wonderful resources especially for genealogists. This map also includes an inset map of part of Cook County including the city of Chicago.
