A stunning copper-engraved map by Nicholas Fils Sanson. There aren't many more beautifully colored maps as this fine map by Sanson. The hand made cotton paper is crisp even after over 250 years.

3. Eastern Hemisphere
Art Source International is proud to offer this map from the 1859 edition of Colton's General Atlas. Colton atlases, especially those from the late 1850's, have become increasingly rare. The General Atlas was the first single edition atlas published by the Colton brothers succeeding the expensive two volume Atlas of the World. These maps have the signature * inch Colton border surrounding each map. The Colton firm refused to compromise quality, choosing to compete for sales in the finer quality international market rather than the cheap domestic one. Because of this, all maps were engraved by steel plates rather than by wax engraving which was the most common method used at this time. This map of the Eastern Hemisphere, is very detailed with identification of countries, regions, islands, cities, rivers, lakes and mountain ranges. Each map has beautiful muted red, green, tan, pink, and yellow hand coloring.

Date: 1859
Price: $195.00

This map of the Eastern Hemisphere is is beautifully hand-colored, showing regions, currents, and major rivers. A fine addition to any collection.

Date: 1866

5. Eastern Hemisphere
This detailed image was originally published in the "Illustrated Historical Atlas of the State of Indiana." This is a majestic decorative map of the world, made the year of the US centennial. Perhaps it was a bit of patriotic sentiment that led Baskin & Forster to create these attractive hemispheric maps and their surrounding vignettes, which would eclipse any of the British work of the time in drama and scale. The maps themselves are very detailed and specific, including hundreds of smaller islands in the pacific and the exotic, remote cities of foreign lands (Timbuctoo), as well as detailed coverage for all of the continents. Around the maps we see images taken from the past, and scenes of present US industry. Images of cherubs and Greek goddesses mingle across from Blacksmiths working around their anvils and shippers filling their warehouse. With an intricate decorative border encompassing the image, this is an outstanding American view of the 19th century world.
