Ile Bourbon
|
The culmination of French 19th century cartography could well be found in these beautiful maps of regions in France. Produced by Vuillemin, in 1870, these finely crafted steel engravings capture the land and character of the area, as only the French could. While the quality of cartography is exemplar for the time, showing us all the detail of towns, villages as well as rivers and streams, one is immediately struck by how decorative these maps are. With vignettes of towns and castles, images of local celebrities and heros, as well as coats of arms, these images have an aesthetic presentation that is tasteful and historic. The regions depicted here are by Department which were developed by Napoleon, and can be a benefit, as they afford us much smaller focus on a region than Province maps might offer.

The United States Geological Survey publishes topographic maps of the entire United States. These maps are often used as the basis for other commercial map products and they serve as one of the best tools available for navigating the country's wild and urban terrain. The maps show contour lines (lines of equal elevation) which depict natural features of the land, as well as streams, roads, trails, forest types, buildings, and other natural man-made features. It has become more difficult over the years to find these older publication dates.

America Septentrionalis... (North America)
|
This is a striking map of the new world, with bold hand color and some very notable qualities. Showing the colonial possesions of several nations, we see the Spanish developments in the southwest, French territories throughout Canada and the western Mississippi valley, as well as the British colonies. With suprisingly accurate depictions of rivers and coasts, this map provides a reasonably proportionate image of an expansive land. Borders are well distinguished by color, yet there are hints of expansion as the borders of the southern colonies not only extend to the Mississippi, but continue beyond into the French Louisiana territory. The map is well complimented by a large decorative cartouche showing Native American and a European settler. This is a classicly handsome map in very good condition.

Art Source International is proud to offer this map from the 1856 edition of Colton's Atlas of the World. Colton atlases, especially those from the 1850's, have become increasingly rare. These maps have the signature 3/4" Colton border surrounding each map. The Colton firm refused to compromise quality, choosing to compete for sales in the finer quality international market rather than the inexpensive domestic one. Because of this, all maps were engraved by steel plates rather than by wax engraving which was the most common method used at this time. This map is very detailed with identification of provinces and or regions, cities, towns and villages, transportation routes including rail roads, common roads, and canals, rivers and lakes, battle fields, and mountain ranges. Each map has beautiful muted red, green, tan, pink, and yellow hand coloring. These are the only Colton maps we have encountered with outline color.
