2. Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, & Alabama
Joseph Meyer's Zeitungs Atlas of Old and New Geography. As usual, the fine German engraving and high level of detail have continued here with these beautiful maps by Joseph Meyer. These atlas maps were produced in Hildburghausen, Amsterdam, and New York, and are considered some of the most detailed maps produced in the 19th Century. Includes inset map of New Orleans.

3. Asher & Adams New Topographical Atlas and Gazatteer of New York. Niagara Erie Chautauqua Cattaraugus Orleans Genesee Wyoming Allegany Monroe and Livingston counties
This colorful map was produced by Asher & Adams, a popular state and county map maker based out of New York City. This map made in 1871 came from the second edition of their atlas entitled "Asher & Adams" New Topographical Atlas and Gazetteer of New York". Each map has original hand coloring in red, yellow, green and pink, and was one of the fines atlases of New York counties every produced. Their fine attention to detail makes these maps very desirable. This map details railroads, wagon trails, canals, cities, towns, and villages, lakes and rivers, lighthouses, survey lines, post offices, county seats, and topographical features such as mountains. Our research has taught us that these 1871 county maps are somewhat uncommon, especially in such fine, clean condition with strong original color. This map features the counties of Niagara Erie Chautauqua Cattaraugus Orleans Genesee Wyoming Allegany Monroe and Livingston counties.

Art Source International is proud to offer this map from the 1856 edition of Colton's Atlas of the World. Colton atlases, especially those from the 1850's, have become increasingly rare. These maps have the signature 3/4" Colton border surrounding each map. The Colton firm refused to compromise quality, choosing to compete for sales in the finer quality international market rather than the inexpensive domestic one. Because of this, all maps were engraved by steel plates rather than by wax engraving which was the most common method used at this time. Each map has beautiful muted red, green, tan, pink, or yellow hand coloring. These are the only Colton maps we have encountered with outline color.

These maps were skillfully created in 1835, which adds to their classic, decorative appeal. This map features a grid a small city maps of the United States. These cities include Portland, Boston, Providence, New York, Albany, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Charleston, Savannah, New Orleans, St. Louis, Louisville, Nashville, Niagara Falls, and Cincinnati.

Also note the information in the margin of the state maps which details land and water area, population broken down by gender and ethnic group, and the population of major towns and counties. This map illustrates the state of Alabama. Colton, the company founder, issued his first “General Atlas” in 1855 and continued publishing this atlas until 1888. These are the first maps we have ever offered from his 1861 “General Atlas”. We believe these 1861 maps are some of his most difficult to find. Every collection should have at least one map by J.H. Colton.
