FRAMED World Hemispheres
This is a fascinating smaller 19th century map showing us the globe in two spheres "Land Hemishphere" and "Water Hemisphere". On the left we see basic views of the continents, each distinctively hand colored, on the right we see the Oceans of the world dotted with islands and some land mass. This is a unique projection and a very 19th century way of looking at the world, one of neat categorization and evaluation. Handsomely framed with ornate inner liner, cloth mat, dark wood frame and UV glass, all archival measures have been taken.

Map of the Polar Regions
While most of the world was basically understood, a few regions remained mysteries. Here we see the North polar region with little or no detail, and only the honest notation,"Unknown Regions". Surrounding the pole is great detail for the islands around Baffin Bay and Greeenland, and even amazing specificity for the islands off the north Russian coast. This is a great glimpse of one of the last 19th century frontiers.

Northern Regions
Art Source International is proud to offer this map from the 1856 edition of Colton's Atlas of the World. Colton atlases, especially those from the 1850's, have become increasingly rare. The Colton firm refused to compromise quality, choosing to compete for sales in the finer quality international market rather than the cheap domestic one. Because of this, all maps were engraved by steel plates rather than by wax engraving which was the most common method used at this time.

Rand McNally Popular Map of the Polar regions
Rand McNally & Company, still a major name in map publishing to this day, began as a small print shop opened in Chicago in 1856 by William H. Rand. The shop originally printed guidebooks and directories. In 1858, Rand hired Andrew McNally who was later to become a partner. Within the next few years, the shop got into the railroad business by starting to print railway tickets and schedules, a key step in the development of the company. The ticket printing led to the publishing of railway guides, and by 1872 Rand McNally and Company had the capacity to publish maps.
This map of the Polar Regions came from Rand McNally's Commercial Atlas, sixty-first Edition dated 1930. A highly successful run of atlases that lasted over a decade. All railroad routes are shown on the map. This map includes all cities and towns, lakes, rivers, and bodies of water.
