This large scale map came from Rand McNally's Commercial Atlas of America. The Rand McNally Atlas was unusual for its time because it was designed to be used by merchants and shippers. Therefore this map is exceptionally detailed in that it shows every railroad, post office, and small town in existence at that time. Many towns shown in this map have since ceased to exist, or have been swallowed up by larger towns. This map is therefore the definitive reference for how North America looked at the turn of the century. Every railroad is featured in a table in margin of map.

Art Source International is proud to offer this map from the 1856 edition of Colton's Atlas of the World. Colton atlases, especially those from the 1850's, have become increasingly rare. These maps have the signature 3/4" Colton border surrounding each map. The Colton firm refused to compromise quality, choosing to compete for sales in the finer quality international market rather than the inexpensive domestic one. Because of this, all maps were engraved by steel plates rather than by wax engraving which was the most common method used at this time. This map is very detailed with identification of provinces and or regions, cities, towns and villages, transportation routes including rail roads, common roads, and canals, rivers and lakes, battle fields, and mountain ranges. Each map has beautiful muted red, green, tan, pink, and yellow hand coloring. These are the only Colton maps we have encountered with outline color.

Not found in any of the reference texts, these maps by Woldermann may
indeed be the first raised relief maps published. While we have seen early
US made raised relief maps that date to the 1880's, never have we seen these
rare German maps which predate US developments by almost a decade. The maps
themselves are composed of a sturdy pressed paper, which forms with
intricate detail and has endured amazingly well. These are fascinating
tactile creations that allow us to feel the river valleys, plateaus, hills
and mountains of the world, as they were known in the 1870's. The maps
themselves are well detailed for place names, borders and even land quality.
The lithographic color amplifies these maps visually, and has remained
