L'Amerique Meridionale et Septentrionale (Framed)
|
This has to be one of our most stunning maps of the Americas. Nicholas de Fer published this map in 1717(dated on map). His depiction of California as an island followed common thought on this subject. In fact, it wasn't until 1746 that Father Consag sailed completely around the Gulf of California and settled the question. Ferdinand VII in 1747 in a royal decree, stated: "California is not an Island".

Rand McNally Popular Map of the Eastern and Western Hemispheres
|
Rand McNally & Company, still a major name in map publishing to this day, began as a small print
shop opened in Chicago in 1856 by William H. Rand. The shop originally printed guidebooks and
directories. In 1858, Rand hired Andrew McNally who was later to become a partner. Within the
next few years, the shop got into the railroad business by starting to print railway tickets and
schedules, a key step in the development of the company. The ticket printing led to the publishing
of railway guides, and by 1872 Rand McNally and Company had the capacity to publish maps.
This
map of The Eastern and Western Hemispheres came from Rand McNally's Commercial Atlas, sixty-first Edition dated
1930. A highly successful run of atlases that lasted over a decade. These maps were primarily used
by business, because of their accurate listing of railroads in operation as well as tables of statistical
information. This map includes all cities and towns, lakes, rivers, and bodies of water. All
topographical features are also included as well as political features such as regions and provinces.

This detailed image was originally published in the "Illustrated Historical Atlas of the State of Indiana." This is a majestic decorative map of the world, published in the year of the US centennial. Perhaps it was a bit of patriotic sentiment that led Baskin & Forster to create these attractive hemispheric maps and their surrounding vignettes, which would eclipse any of the British work of the time in drama and scale. The maps themselves are very detailed and specific, including hundreds of smaller islands in the pacific and the exotic, remote cities of foreign lands, as well as detailed coverage for all of the continents. Around the maps we see images taken from the past, and scenes of present US industry. Images of cherubs and Greek goddesses mingle across from Blacksmiths working around their anvils and shippers filling their warehouse. With an intricate decorative border encompassing the image, this is an outstanding American view of the 19th century world.

For over 60 years the Colton family was the premier publisher of maps in the United States. J.H.
